ADUR WORLD OCEANS DAY 2015
Volunteers are welcome to help or even man a stall at Adur World Oceans Day on 13 June 2015 in Shoreham-by-Sea. All wildlife themes accepted on manned stalls, including photographic displays. They will need to be pre-booked though and there is limited space and tables. Displays limited to your imagination. Education and no selling.
If you wish to participate or help, please reply. Exhibits are set up the day before.

Do you want to know why a lobster turns red after cooking or why a crab walks sideways? Or have you found something on the beach or have a photograph you want identified, please come along and celebrate Adur World Oceans Day event in Shoreham, on Coronation Green throughout the day. Experts will be on hand to answer queries about marine life and there will live lobsters and crabs and activities for school aged children
For the sixteenth successive year, Shoreham-by-Sea will be celebrating the international World Oceans Day with an all day environmental exhibition about the local sea and seashore, nature and biodiversity. The family event will take place under the marquee on Coronation Green (on the town side of Shoreham footbridge) all day on Saturday 13th June on the same day as the Farmer's Market and other activities in Shoreham.

Wildlife writer Steve Savage will be present with the dolphin exhibit and other marine life activities.
The children have an opportunity for interactive play whilst learning with the display by Friends of Shoreham Beach.
The British Marine Life Study Society are in charge of the live animal display of lobsters and the smaller fish, crabs and other life found on the Sussex seashore. Experts will be on hand to answer questions and identify nature discoveries.

Jim Partridge (Monteum Ltd) will be bringing some lobster parlour pots as well as the lobsters. (This will give photo opportunities on the day)
The Shoreham Society will be present with a table on local heritage and conservation.
Southwick Camera Club will man a display of marine life photographs with someone present to answer questions about photography and club activities.

Adur was one of the UK leaders in presenting the thirteenth environmental exhibition of World Oceans Day on Coronation Green, Shoreham-by-Sea. Len Nevell of the British Marine Life Study Society presented the usual exhibition of lobsters and crabs. The Friends of Shoreham Beach (FOSB) took an active role with their display of the wonders of Shoreham Beach. Wildlife writer Steve Savage presented the whale and dolphin exhibition with the life sized replica of a Bottle-nosed Dolphin. Nikki Hills on behalf of the Sussex Wildlife Trust produced an interactive display on the sea and seashore for the younger age group. David and Marion Wood produced a presentation about Widewater Lagoon (brackish lagoon) LNR. Exhibitors were able to find the time to answer questions about marine life.
Other participants included Southwick Camera Club with an exhibition of seascapes and marine life, and Colin Knight and Mark Colvin with a butterfly presentation on the behalf of the Sussex branch of the Butterfly Conservation Society.

Participation is inclusive and any other environmental, wildlife, marine-based, community groups, horticultural clubs, heritage societies, schools, lifeboat groups etc. on the education-based theme (no selling) is invited with advance pre-booking. Interactive activities get preference for the space available. Stalls with an electrical supply (enough to run computers) is provided free of charge for participants

For the twelfth successive year, Shoreham-by-Sea will be celebrating the international World Oceans Day with an all day environmental fayre about the local sea and seashore. The exhibition will take place under the marquee on Coronation Green (on the town side of Shoreham footbridge) all day on Saturday 9th June on the second weekend of the Adur Festival. Len Nevell will be present with the lobsters and crabs, and there will be aquarium and strandline exhibits of what lives under the sea off the Sussex coasts.
"The idea is to give the younger children a first hand experience of the undersea world, to show them some of the creatures, small fish, crabs and other strange animals that live in our oceans. Several national initiatives have now caught up with the lack of contact of nature that young children have." (Quote by Andy Horton) Experts will be on hand to answer questions and identify anything washed up on the seashore and seen beneath the waves. Wildlife writer Steve Savage will present the whale and dolphin exhibition with the life sized replica of a Bottle-nosed Dolphin. The Friends of Shoreham Beach (FOSB) will again take an active role with their display of the wonders of Shoreham Beach with opportunities for children of all ages to participate. There is still space for wildlife, heritage groups, other local community groups, volunteers and anybody interested in the oceans and wildlife to participate. World Oceans Day was first declared as 8th June at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Events will occur all around the world on and around this day, which now enjoys the support of the United Nations on the sustainable use of the resources of the oceans. In June 1992, over 150 Heads of States signed the Convention on Biological Diversity at Rio de Janeiro. They did so to express a shared belief that action must be taken to halt the worldwide loss of animal and plant species and genetic resources.
Adur World Oceans Day is a collaborative project by various groups including the British Marine Life Study Society, the Sea Watch Foundation, Friends of Shoreham Beach, the Ouse & Adur Rivers Trust and other groups, with support from Adur District Council. Other events will take place in East Street and Shoreham town centre on the same day, including the monthly Farmers Market and the Food & Drink Festival. In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly decided that, as from 2009, 8 June would be designated by the United Nations as “World Oceans Day” (resolution 63/111, paragraph 171). Many countries have celebrated World Oceans Day following the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, which was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The oceans are essential to food security and the health and survival of all life, power our climate and are a critical part of the biosphere. The official designation of World Oceans Day is an opportunity to raise global awareness of the current challenges faced by the international community in connection with the oceans.
